I have an orange-red 97. I was thinking of getting it repainted as well - say a blood-red with scallops on tank a la the deluxe Magna 750 (flames seem kind of common).
The stickers come off the side panels quite easily but I don't think a heat gun will work on the tank decal as it is covered with clear coat. My guess is that you'd have to wash off the clear coat with some kind of solvent...
Anyone know for sure?
